Design of FIM mold (Stainless Steel Swiss Gearwheel)

Swiss watch component: 17-4 Stainless Steel Gearwheel Freeform Injection Molding (FIM) combines the benefits of additive manufacturing and injection molding, offering design freedom with complex geometries and numerous rubber and plastic material options, including metals and ceramics. 1. Print orientation is important when the printed component consists of surfaces or features parallel to the build platform that have no underlying material to support them. Such features are called - overhangs - and they would normally require additional supports when common 3D printing is carried out. Overhangs will result in geometrical deviations, delamination, or even complete print failure with poor design and wrong part orientation inside the FIM mold. Layer surface area and adhesion to the rest of the print are the main factors that will determine how an overhang is printed. One way to eliminate overhang problems without the need for supports inside the FIM mold, is to change the orientation of the component inside the FIM mold, aim for gradual transition, to overhangs and other critical features. This tutorial will show you how to simple and fast overcome such overhang limitations. 2. Placing the gate and venting system will depend on the geometry of the component inside the mold, especially when critical features such as logos or engravings are included on the component. On this tutorial you will learn how to adjust the gate (inlet) and vent (outlet) in order to accommodate any design changes. Additionally, you will see an example of how to make a more advanced venting system in order to adjust the melt flow around critical features, plus some tips and tricks on how to remove the build easier after printing. The greatest advantage of FIM is that tool inserts with different features can be printed in one batch, making it easier to iteratively test both part geometry and mold features. Testing different gate and vent sizes or location is now possible at reduced tooling lead times and cost. For more tutorials on FIM technology visit our YouTube channel.
